Essential Questions to Ask Your Wedding Caterer Before Booking

Catering is a significant expense when planning a wedding. Whether you're hiring your own caterer or it's provided through your venue, here are some important questions to explore before booking:

  1. Is this pricing confirmed for our event date?

Keep in mind that many venues and caterers increase their pricing each year, and you may be talking to potential vendors prior to your wedding year. If pricing is not yet confirmed for your event date, ask about writing a cap into the contract (i.e. food pricing will not increase by more than 10% from the numbers we are seeing today) in order to protect yourself.

  2. Are there additional fees we should know about?

Ask if there are any service fees, automatic gratuity, or other expenses you should know about prior to signing a contract. These are all important when factoring catering cost into your overall budget.

  3. Do you charge a cake-cutting fee?

You may be having your cake delivered by another vendor, but who's cutting it? And if it's the caterer, will they be charging a fee per person to cut and serve the cake? This is a fairly common practice, and it's better to know about it up front so you can factor that in to your overall cost.
